About Boondall:

Located 15 kilometers north-east of Brisbane, Boondall is a suburb that was originally named Cabbage Tree Creek, after the creek that flows through it. It was later renamed “Boondall” in 1923 after the Aboriginal word that possibly means “crooked creek.” It is surrounded by Deagon, Sandgate, and Shorncliffe on the north, Banyo, Geebung, and Virginia on the south, Nudgee and Nudgee Beach on the east, and Taigum and Zillmere on the west. As per the 2016 census, Boondall had a population of 9,217.

The Europeans began settling in the suburb after a bridge was built over the creek in the 1860s. More money and industry came in once the Sandgate railway opened in 1882 and the Christian Brothers Nudgee College in 1891. Boondall Primary was then opened in 1925 and in a nearby lot, a public hall was opened for church and other purposes. Several shops started to emerge by the start of the postwar years on Sandgate Road and in the 1950s, Sue’s Korner Store on Beams Road opened. A drive-in cinema on Stanworth Road began operating by 1956, which became a popular destination for the suburb.

Transport growth started by the 1980s and by 1986, the Gateway Motorway that cut through the wetlands ensured further residential growth in Boondall. Developments have still been ongoing, but they were towards the west when a drive-in neighborhood shopping center opened in Taigum in 1982. The Brisbane City Council acquired the wetlands in 1990 and were added to the Moreton Bay RAMSAR listing in 1993. The Brisbane Entertainment Centre is found near the train station and hosts live shows all-year-round.
