About Chermside:

Located only 9 kilometres north of Brisbane, Chermside is Brisbane’s major suburb and is one of its fastest-growing suburbs. It is also referred to as the “mini CBD of Brisbane,” and is one of the main destinations of the Northern Busway of Queensland Transport. Chermside is surrounded by Upper Mount Gravatt to the south, Indooroopilly to the west, and Carindale in thesoutheast, and had a population of 9,135 as per the 2016 census.

When the first plot of land was sold on May 23, 1866, the Europeans started settling in the area and this led to an increase in population, also because of the increase in post-war residential development. When the Gympie gold rush began in 1867, most travelers headed north had a hard time passing through a creek in the area, which is why Chermside was originally known as Downfall Creek. It was then renamed to Chermside after Sir Herbert Chermside, a Queensland governor, in 1903. Westfield Chermside, Australia’s biggest Westfield shopping center, opened in May 1957 as the Chermside Drive-in Shopping Centre. It now boasts a 16-screen cinema complex and 3-storey Myer and is also the home to the first Apple store in Brisbane.

By the start of the 1970s, the first Kmart store in Queensland opened in Chermside and was established near a Coles supermarket. However, both stores relocated to Westfield Chermside and in the mid-1990s, the original locations of the stores were replaced with specialty stores and a Woolworths supermarket. Nature lovers can visit the Marchant Park and 7th Brigade Park, or the Chermside Aquatic Centre, which is the largest water park in Brisbane.
