Edge Small Business Consulting: Your Bookkeeping Virginia Specialists
Located 11 kilometers northeast of Central Brisbane, Virginia originally consisted of swamps and farmlands, and was allegedly named after the US state. The Downfall Creek swampland is found to the east, which is now enclosed by the Virginia Golf Club that opened in 1930. Virginia had a population of 2,209 as per the 2016 census.
The suburb was established in the 1880s and began as an agricultural community. It finally became its own district after joining the North Coast railway line in 1888. The Virginia Brick Company was formed to the west of the railway station in 1892, a post office opened six years later, and a Presbyterian Church opened in 1911.
A small community started to grow around the railway station. The Virginia State School later opened to the west in February 1920, and houses and a general store were built near Sandgate and Toombul Roads to the east. A School of Arts was built at the corner of Ridge and Scott streets in 1922, and local employment included railway workshops, brick and pipe works, and a fruit cannery in Banyo. Residential development only started in the late 1950s, and in the 1990s, several factories were redeveloped for commercial purposes. Virginia currently hosts several retail outlets, food shops, and supermarkets, and is well-connected to Shorncliffe, the Redcliff Peninsula, the Brisbane Airport, and Brisbane in general.
