About Wavell Heights:
Located 10 kilometers north of the Brisbane CBD, Wavell Heights is a residential suburb that was originally known as West Nundah. The Brisbane City Council requested a name change in 1941, and it was renamed the following year in honor of Field Marshal Lord Wavell who served as the Commander-In-Chief of the Allied Forces in the Middle East during WWII. Surrounding suburbs include Northgate and Chermside. Wavell Heights had a population of 9,684 as per the 2016 census.
The area of Wavell Heights adjacent to Sandgate Road is less than a kilometer away from the Nundah railway station. Housing development started in the mid-1920s and was nearly completed by the outbreak of the Second World War. The Catholic Church of Saint Paschal Baylon was opened in 1937 and the West Nundah Methodist Church followed a year later. As the post-war expansion in the northern suburbs of Brisbane started, Wavell Heights State School opened in January 1948. In January 1950, the Our Lady of the Angels’ Catholic School was opened and was managed by the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Wavell Heights Presbyterian Church opened three years later and the St Thomas’ Anglican Church was consecrated on October 13, 1957.
The suburb is serviced by the Wavell Heights Neighbourhood Society Inc., which also manages a community center and a public tennis court. Major roads include Bilsen and Hamilton roads, and the area boasts several parks including Bristol Park and Shaw Park—the latter housing ten tennis courts!
