Located 14 kilometres north of Central Brisbane, Zillmere is a post-WWII suburb that was once known as “Zillman’s Waterholes,” a watercourse flowing eastwards and joining the Nundah Creek in Banyo. It was named after Johann Leopold Zillman, a German Lutheran missionary who was stationed in the area in 1838. Zillmere had a population of 8,967 as per the 2016 census.

Farm lots adjacent to Zillman Waterholes were sold in 1853, and it was only in the 1870s that the suburb started to attract settlement. Residents farmed the area and grew several types of crops and pigs, and by 1888, the North Coast Railway Line started servicing the area. John C. Hutton’s slaughterhouse was opened in 1898, and his bacon factory also gave the majority of the employment in Zillmere. By the early 1950s, the Housing Commission reclaimed Zillmere to build prefabricated houses imported from France, and residential development was significantly completed in the 1970s.

Zillmere is home to a popular shopping centre, which is to the east of the railway line near the railway station. It includes a lot of shops such as a pharmacy, newsagent, and convenience stores. It is also the home to the Geebung Bowls Club, Zillmere Eagles Australian Football Club, and North Star Football Club. It hosts the Zillmere Multicultural Festival (known as Zillfest,) a yearly event that showcases the culture and tradition of different local cultural groups.
